EU Blue Card: working and living in Germany for highly qualified professionals
The EU Blue Card is a special type of residence permit for university-educated nationals of countries outside the European Union who wish to work and live in Germany. Alongside the possibility of working for a German employer, the Blue Card offers a number of advantages, such as easier family reunification, faster access to permanent residence and greater opportunities for professional development in Germany.
Who can obtain an EU Blue Card?
The EU Blue Card is intended for highly qualified professionals who meet the statutory requirements for this type of residence permit. In most cases you need to meet the following conditions:
- you hold a university degree that is recognised in or comparable to the corresponding German qualification
- you have a job offer or a concluded employment contract with an employer in Germany
- the position matches your professional qualifications
- the agreed salary meets the statutory minimum for the issuing of an EU Blue Card
Special conditions and exceptions apply to certain professions, which is why it is important to check before filing whether you meet all the statutory criteria.
What does the procedure look like?
The way the application is filed depends on whether you are in Serbia or already residing in Germany.
- If you are outside Germany, the procedure usually begins with a national visa application at the German embassy or consulate. After your arrival in Germany, a residence permit is issued in the form of an EU Blue Card.
- If you are already lawfully in Germany and meet the requirements, in many cases it is possible to apply for the issuing of an EU Blue Card, or for a change of your existing residence permit, directly at the competent immigration office (Ausländerbehörde).
Properly prepared documentation significantly reduces the likelihood of requests for additional documents and contributes to a faster decision.
