Digital nomads in Serbia

Would you like to live in Serbia while continuing to work online? If you work remotely, provide services to clients in different countries or run your own online business, Serbia can be an attractive destination for relocating and doing business.

Serbia currently has no special category of residence called a "digital nomad visa". However, depending on how you work and how long you plan to stay, there are various options for regulating your residence and work.

One of these options is to register your own business in Serbia and to regulate your residence on the basis of self-employment.

Important!

The mere fact that you work online does not automatically mean that you meet the requirements for long-term residence in Serbia. Before the procedure is started, the appropriate legal basis needs to be determined with regard to your nationality, your existing business model, the type of activity, the clients you work with and the period during which you wish to stay in Serbia. If self-employment is the appropriate basis, the business registration needs to be properly linked with the visa and/or residence procedure.

Who is this service intended for?

This service may be suitable for:

  • freelancers and consultants who work online
  • IT and marketing professionals
  • designers, developers and other professionals who provide their services remotely
  • entrepreneurs who do business with clients abroad
  • owners of online businesses
  • foreign nationals who wish to register a business and relocate to Serbia

We analyse every case individually in order to determine which business form and which basis of residence suit the specific situation.

What does the procedure look like?

  1. Step 1

    Analysis of your situation

First we check your nationality, how you currently do business, the activity you carry out and your plans for staying in Serbia. On that basis we determine whether self-employment is the appropriate basis and which steps need to be taken.

  2. Step 2

    Registering your business in Serbia

If the chosen model is self-employment, we prepare the procedure for registering the appropriate form of business in Serbia. For many independent professionals, one option is registering as a sole trader (preduzetnik). On registration, the business activity, the registered address and other details relevant to your future business need to be determined correctly.

  3. Step 3

    The D visa, where required

For nationals of countries that require a long-stay visa, an application for a D visa is filed once the appropriate basis has been established. In the case of self-employment, the D visa is applied for on the basis of employment – self-employment. Whether a D visa is required depends, among other things, on the applicant's nationality and on the specific entry and residence regime in Serbia.

  4. Step 4

Arriving in Serbia and regulating your residence

If you plan to live and work in Serbia for a longer period, the next step is to regulate your temporary residence and your right to work. In the case of self-employment, the application is filed for a single permit for temporary residence and work. The procedure is conducted electronically via the single portal for foreign nationals.

  5. Step 5

    Continued residence in Serbia

Once the permit has been approved, you can continue to live and do business in Serbia in line with the basis on which your residence was granted. If your family later moves to Serbia as well, we can also analyse the possibility of regulating their residence on the basis of family reunification.

How can we help you?

Depending on your situation, we can guide you through the entire procedure:

  • analysing the appropriate basis of residence
  • choosing the appropriate business model
  • registering as a sole trader or in another appropriate business form
  • preparing the documentation
  • assistance with the address/registered office required for the procedure
  • preparing and filing the D visa application
  • communication with the competent authorities
  • preparing the application for the single permit for residence and work
  • support after your arrival in Serbia
  • regulating the residence of family members, where the requirements are met

This way you do not have to link the business registration, the visa and your residence status on your own – we plan the procedure as a whole.

Example

You work online for clients abroad and wish to relocate to Serbia.

After analysing your business model, we determine whether registering a business in Serbia and self-employment represent the appropriate basis.

If so, we can organise the procedure from registering the business, through the D visa where required, to regulating longer-term residence and work in Serbia.

If your spouse and children later join you, we also plan their procedure for regulating residence.

What can complicate the procedure?

Problems most often arise when:

  • the chosen basis of residence does not match the way you actually do business
  • the business is registered without the immigration procedure having been planned beforehand
  • the information in the documentation is not consistent
  • no suitable address has been secured
  • the visa or residence application is not supported by the required documentation
  • the applicant assumes that registering a company or a sole trader in itself guarantees a visa or residence

Registering a business provides the basis for starting the appropriate procedure, but it does not automatically guarantee that a visa or residence will be approved.
